Driver instructions:
1. Verify that my existing installation of Ubuntu did not support this printer.
2. Browse to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_m1536dnf_mfp.html and click the "Download HPLIP" button.
3. Open a terminal and change directory to where the download was, ie. "cd \Downloads"
4. Run the automatic installer, "sh hplip-3.11.4.run"
5. Step through the various instructions. Since I had dependencies to resolve, this took a while.
6. The instructions said I needed to quit before Setup, log out, and log back in. I didn't, but it worked fine.
7. In Setup, choose the default options, or the obvious alternatives. The main change was to select Network instead of the default USB.
8. Unlike the June 2 review, I did not need to change defaults for Simple Scan.
Comments:
The process took time, but was simpler than the previous reviews led me to believe. Not quick, but very straightforward.

The install claimed to set up the fax, and a separate printer for the fax function shows in Printers, but I have not tested it. I use the fax to receive, and might some day use it to send from physical paper; but I have no need to send or receive faxes as data files.

Driver instructions:
Installation is very simple.

1. You start by downloading the latest driver from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html

2. Run the following command in the folder where you saved the downloaded driver (don’t run it as sudo)
sh ./hplip-3.11.5.run

The setup would create a directory and launch the setup process, I chose to go with the automated option. The installer automatically detects all the dependencies and downloads the necessary packages if there is a need for it. Finally it would ask you to plug in or re-plug-in your device and it would allow you to install and configure your printer/scanner.

Easy-peasy; Thank You HPLIP for brining all HP printing goodness to *nix!

Linux
Ubuntu 10.10 does come with HPLIP 3.10.6 included, however this printer model needs HPLIP 3.11.5 to work. An additonal plugin needs to be installed (either during the installation process or available within the HPLIP Status Service) to enable scanning.

1. Open Synaptic Package Manager
2. Search for HPLIP
3. Check the installed version in the 'Latest Version' column
4. Point your browser at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_m1536dnf_mfp.html
5. Check the required 'Minimum HPLIP version'
6. Download the Automatic Installer (.run file), http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/hplip/hplip-3.11.5.run
7. Open a terminal
8. Run the Automatic Installer by navigating to the directory where you saved the downloaded file and run 'sh hplip-3.11.5.run'
9. Select automatic mode when prompted
10. Verify your Linux Distribution
11. Enter Your root/Superuser User Password
12. Read the Installation Notes
12a. Download and install any missing dependencies (installer will check automatically)

The HP Setup will appear:
13. Select how your printer will be connected to your computer
14. Select the printer to be configured
15. Select the PPD file (or driver) to be used for your printer. The PPD files (drivers) which are most similar to your printer are displayed. I choose for the default driver.
16. Confirm the printer settings and finish the configuration process
17. Click on 'Add Printer'
What doesn't work:
Simple Scan does work, but one needs to change the default settings:
In the menu Document --> Preferences it is imperative that both the values for 'Scan Side' 'Page Size' are to be changed to 'Front' and 'A4' respectively. If left unchanged this will either result in a 'Failed to scan - Unable to connect to scanner' error or nothing happening at all.

Both XSane and Skanlite work when the default settings are used.
