The best way is to use the newest hplip installation from hplipopensource.com - just do as instructed : the GUI is very friendly. :)
Since Ubuntu 10.04 even the Simple Scan is working well - no need anymore for the XSane. ;)

Comments:
For basic printing functionality use the Postscript PPD. For advanced functionality such as printer status, maintenance features, scanning and photo card unload use the HPLIP driver (which includes HPIJS).
