Driver instructions:
Go to Brother's website driver download for Linux distros. http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html
You must pay attention to the pre-requisites for the install of the drivers or you will not be able to load the drivers on to your system.
Basically you have to create 2 new directories for the CUPS and LPR install there is a link in step 2 of the walk through in the Brother's website. Also note you have to have the printer USB cable installed or this process will not work...
Requirement
1. "sudo aa-complain cupsd" command is required before the installation. (this command did not work under 11.10 so I went on to step 2) it works under earlier versions of Ubuntu...
2. "sudo mkdir /usr/share/cups/model" command (as it is) is required before the installation.
Step 4 of the pre-requisites:
printer/PC-FAX drivers
Requirement (superuser authorization is required to run the command)
"mkdir /var/spool/lpd" command is required if the folder does not exist.
There is a /var/spool directory already but you still need to create the lpd directory for the LPR driver install to complete.
Also note if you need scanner functionality then continue down the pre-requisite page for those instructions as well. Again it's all pretty straight forward no need to visit a million forums to make this work. Just pay attention to the terminal windows messages. It will clue you in the issue or problem most of the time.
What doesn't work:You must pay attention to the pre-requisites for the install of the drivers or you will not be able to load the drivers on to your system.

Faxing
Comments:It just works as is with very little hassle...I think it functions better on my Linux box than on my Power Mac...

Use the printer/scanner drivers Brother provides here:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html
and follow the instructions to install them. After some minor futzing, wireless printing works perfectly, wireless scanning works perfectly, even wireless scanning using the printer control panel to send the scan to the Ubuntu Linux computer works flawlessly. The scanner works fine both in flatbed and ADF mode.
If you follow the Brother instructions for Ubuntu Linux, you will miss one or two things. Follow the instructions and use this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=590793
I've added a few things specific to the MFC-J615W here:

Overall, pretty easy!

The only thing I can't get working is the fax from the Ubuntu Linux PC over wireless. I'm not sure if it's a limitation of Ubuntu, a limitation or error in the drivers or if it's just me, but there doesn't seem to be a dialog box which allows you to specify the fax recipient's number. Faxing might work via USB using Efax, but that's not how I will be using it.
This is a known limitation of the direct fax driver - from the Brother page for the Ubuntu direct fax driver:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_fmd1.html
"Please connect your MFC to your PC (running Ubuntu) with a USB cable.
Network connection is not supported."
but it should work via the LPR and CUPS wrapper drivers which merely install a dummy printer. I can't get it to do that so far.

Overall though, I'm very pleased with this multi-function and I'd highly recommend it to other Linux users.

Driver instructions:
Dunno why the drivers aren't included in Linux distros. They're licensed under the GPL and everything. But you can download them directly from Brother. I installed them on Debian Squeeze with no problems.
Comments:Pros: Nice and compact, attractive, easy setup. Smart electronics. Best of all, the Linux drivers provided by Brother work great -- all features (print, scan, fax) are accessible from Linux, including all options, and it works over the network just fine.
Cons: A little slow, but about what you'd expect for an inkjet in this price range.
